Where did the week go?

Tomorrow is Saturday...WOW!

I work 3-12 hour days a week and this week I worked all 3 of them in a row. It may not seem like a big deal but it really is. It's grueling. I'm too old for it anymore and I'm tired...very very tired...and I'm tired of being tired.

But, I'm one of the few people in the world who loves their profession and for the last 5 years I have LOVED my job. And if I do say so myself, I'm darn good at it!
I have loved my co-workers, our doctors, our patients, everything, until now.

Our doctors are thinking about retirement soon and wanting to slow it down a bit...so at the end of last year they did the unthinkable...they sold their business (and us) to a BIG company. Lots of changes have taken place since the acquisition but none of them seem to benefit us. Lots has been taken away but nothing has been given in its place. Just added responsibility.

It may be time for me to say good-by...yet I get so emotional just thinking about leaving my other family. I kinda feel like I would be abandoning them.

In the meantime, as of April, I will change to part-time. I will be working 2 days a week, not 3, and will continue to be in charge of my unit. Slowly, I'm trying to ease away...but taking baby steps!

What area of nursing are you in?

Natasha,

I work in Hemodialysis...in what was the largest privately owned dialysis unit in the US.

I am a charge nurse in a unit and oversee approximately 72 patients and about 10 staff daily.

We have 4 units total.

That makes me a little sad, medicine going more and more towards profit only. Unfortunately, not for the benefit of the patients.

Linda... I accidentally deleted your email with your email address. I want to send you my mailing address... could you send me another email? I would love to do the good mail. Jen, turned me onto the idea, I just never got going with it.

Thanks.

It really is frusturating how medicine has changed so much. I know I would be wiped out after working 3 12's, too! Enjoy your time off. Is your weather beautiful this weekend? It is such a beautiful time of the year. Spring has sprung! :)

Linda,
Wow, that's a lot to handle. I run an HIV case management department - I used to supervise only nurses but 2 years ago switched to social workers as case managers.

You have a lot of responsibility - I would be pooped after 1 12 hr shift, not to mention 3!!
