So here's the question: For those of you that use a site meter on your blog, does it bother you when it shows that you've had lots of visitors to your blog yet you only have a handful of comments that were made!?!
Yesterday was a prime example for me: 99 visits...16 comments.
I don't know if it bummed me out or if it freaked me out.
Who are these other 73 visitors? I would have welcomed their comments.

Hope you have a nice weekend!!! I think we all love getting comments. I try to leave comments most of the time, but sometimes I'm in a hurry and just dont have time to do it till later!
I completely understand. One day I had about 150 people visit with only about 5 comments. I wish that I could leave comments through Bloglines. I have a bad habit of reading posts through that and then forgetting that I never left a comment.
Hope you have a great weekend.
Love when you start a post with "I'm nosy! =)" I do have a sitemeter, but don't look at it to often (not 20 times a day when I first got it!!) What is insteresting to me is trying to figure out why some posts gets lots of comments and some don't - it's a bit of a mystery!!!
Well, I am one of those 99 people that was here and did not comment. Its a terrible habit. ....
Thats one reason why I went private.. My hits were WAY high. (400+ a day) and less than 20 comments. I felt I needed a little privacy and now I get like 30 hits a day. HA! HA!
Yes, I completely understand, as well. Sometimes I find myself getting really caught up in all of it - hate to admit that, but it's true :) (Those are the times I think I should just quit blogging.) I do try to leave comments and just generally be courteous in the blog world.
Have a great weekend!
I don't watch my sitemeter really closely, but I know I have the same thing. There are a lot of "lurkers". However - I was one of your 99 yesterday. I usually leave a comment, but I ended up working lat and was trying to quickly read my blogs at 9:00, so I left very few comments as I sped through. You are right though - We all like comments and the relationships we build.
happy friday, linda:)
i think it's all about investment. the blogs that i notice getting a lot of comments are the ones that are opinionated, not reciprocated, or are tragedy oriented...
i personally love, love, love the blog family i have and wouldn't mind if it got a little bigger here and there. but, i wouldn't want it to get so big whereas it would take-away from the relationships i have already formed. (i hope that makes sense;)
love,
dani
thanks for leaving such a nice comment on my blog, which led me to your blog! can't wait to read backwards and learn more about you and your area. California is a state I've longed to visit!
So true! And I'm guilty of lurking and not commenting...not intentionally, but usually I get pulled away when I'm in the middle of reading a blog and lose my train of thought...not hard for me to do.....
Did you finish your fall project???
Want pictures....
Oh Linda you caught me! I was one of your 99 visits who didn't leave a comment! I wasn't sure I had anything good to say about nesting!
Anyway, hope you have a good day!
Your loved, even in a private mode of someone. 99 people stopped to see how you were. That is alot. Thanks for always cheering me up and being the great person you are. I really enjoy you alot. :)
I've used site meter, and I've removed it because I didn't ever seem to look at it.
I think it's rude to visit and not speak. In fact, it's almost spooky--like stalking. Therefore, I always comment. It doesn't take much to leave one word: "Hi" "nice" "okay".
Yeah- I know what you mean. I used to check my map thing non stop, but now I don't worry about it.
I like What Dani said. I love the friendships we are all building & I couldn't imagine having 100 people I was trying to stay connected too... Wouldn't that mean I was Famous! :)
Hi Linda...I love your start - "I'm nosy"...you crack me up! Yes, I can relate with ya...I love comments tho...makes me do the happy dance!
Hugz,
Michele
Well, look at you, 14 comments on this one already!!! I too love it when you say... "I'm nosey" too fun!
Okay, yes. I started my blog as a journal. BUT, then I started to make friends, YEAH!!!! And, yes, I too love comments. I realize that what is going on in my life is not comment material, LOL... II post THIS "dad/sick" stuff for me, to document it. I try to throw in some fun stuff once in a while too but... YOU are a great fun person, I always comment...
That's funny. Since I lurk around sometimes, just clicking on links and reading bits of stuff from different people, I don't comment on everyones.
I'll join you in the goal to comment more, lurk less! You're right, you never know if you might just make someone's day.
Amen to Dani...you hit it right on the head
I check mine now and again too, and it always surprises me how many people visit and dont leave a comment,I try and leave a comment when I visit,I know the feeling.
Have a good weekend
Diane
You should know that Im often guilty of visiting sometimes without making a comment!! You are always so good and kind to leave comments on my silly site. I know how fun it is to have a comment. Thank you for that.
Hi Linda. Well, I recently installed one more gadget. I think I now have 4 that tell me people have visited me. The only time I really get freaked out is when it says country ? location ? referal ? and they have stayed on for 73 minutes and looked at 18 pages. Now that freaks me out. Who is it?
I only get a few comments too, and that's pretty much okay with me. I really want to try my best to get back to each person who comments, and don't know if I could if I had 65 comments or so daily.
I guess mainly I am happy if people are hearing things about the Lord working in my life, and reading the Scriptures I try to remember to put on, and also, my parents enjoy reading it.
I have been reall obsessed (in the past) about hoping people will read it. Now, I'm just putting up things I want to remember, and someday my kids can read it. I love all the encouragement too.
Thank you so much for your encouraging words to me this past week. God has blessed me so much with you blogging buddies. Hugs, Kathi PS I recently intalled a live traffic feed, which tells me what city they are from. Sometimes this gives a tiny bit more info. than my site meter. I don't know, I am not obsessed anymore, but I just like to know who out there is looking.
yea...kind of the freak out..
but I am just glad to see that someone besides me stops in and checks my rants for the day
Hey...two things:
1) Congrats on your 99 visitors! That's great no matter how you look at it.
2) You have an award waiting on my blog.
Great job sister!
See what happens when you get nosy...people comment! LOL!
Actually, I think it's maybe pretty normal? Often when I have a moment to blog hop, I get interrupted (like I have been TWICE while trying to comment here) and then don't take the time to comment because I've pretty lost my train of thought which is very easy to do these days. Plus I tend to read over a long period of time before I start commenting, so it's more of a building a relationship kind of thing.
As someone said, it's often the opinionated type of blogs that get lots of comments. And there are blogsites which give helpful hints for building up readers and commenters.
But perhaps it comes down to *why* each one of us blogs. For me it's more of a journal of daily life and is simply written. Most of my commenters are real life people who make a comment when I see them at the grocery store! LOL!
And now I have to put little girls to bed, so I've been interrupted again!
Blessings,
Tammy ~@~
it does make you go hmmmm. I understand a frequent reader might comment once out of every 3 times they stop by basically about posts that connect to them. But, that leaves a lot of lurkers that you don't know. I have a site meter and one of the things I find amusing is visits by location. There is someone from a VERY small town near where I grew up that visits almost daily. I don't think I know anyone that lives in that town and I know no one from that town has commented on my blog. So, it is puzzling that someone would visit that often and not comment?
I don't understand why some people don't comment - even when a post is like "just say hi." Maybe they're afraid of not being anonymous anymore. I think even with 16 comments, you are doing great. I usually don't get more than 2 or 3. :)
I have wondered the same thing from time to time. I am glad you posted
this. It reminded me that I needed to put my site meter back up. Some how it got lost when I was working on my blog.
I can't wait to see what you did with all of that darling ribbon! I do have fall fever, around my house too. I wish the weatherman would send cooler temperatures. :) Have a great weekend, Linda.
Oh, this cracks me up as I always have close to 200 readers everday and I only get...if lucky....10 comments. Most times, less.
Not sure who they are or how they came by my blog, but I would LOVE to have them all comment.
Oh well... I enjoy having people read the blog for whatever reason.
I do keep a pretty tight hold on th ecounts and check everyday.
I do wonder why so few comments.
Ahhh sigh!
It's funny that it seems we all feel the same way about this. I go back and forth about the real reason I blog. I should just get rid of my sitemeter because it starts making me think about the "numbers". The reason I started the blog was to reach out to people and encourage other women going through mid life transition like I was. I was crying and having identity crisis as I was becoming an empty nester and there was not very much info out there. That is truly why I started and then I had this unexpected bonus that I made friends! We have such a great blogging community of friends and that is what it is all about. I also am using it as my daily journal and keeping our family history. I hope there is a way we can transfer it all to a disk or something to keep it forever.
Have a great weekend!
Hugs, Sharon
Linda,
It's so funny that you should post this. My daughter and I met with two blogging friends today (one none of us had met) for lunch. I posted about it today.
We talked about this very thing. I had a site meter for a few days but took it off.
We were also talking about how some people get so many comments.
I think we all think alike....we all love comments.
Sometimes I just read a blog and don't have time at the moment to comment and come back later. You should be proud...I think my comment will be #29! I'm pretty sure the most I've ever gotten is 16. ;)
I wrote something on my blog today about how you inspired me to begin decorating a little bit for fall.
I'm thrilled with 16 comments. My goal has never been about how many people leave a message, it's more about putting my thoughts down.
Wow, I have to say that is a pretty good number of comment to viewer ratio! I think 1% is considered normal. Sad, but true! Most people are lurkers. I wish everyone would say "hi!" but sadly, they are silent!
But, another thing, some people read blogs in readers and you cannot comment unless you make extra effort. And sometimes people are just busy and they read and move on.
Happy day from one who loves the comments too!
Melissa
I have been thinking a lot about you.. Ya know I miss you. I could get used to having lunch with you once a week or month. Are you sure you don't want to come down more. How's Lil Sis? Is she doing ok, does she need anything? If you ever want me to surprise her with something from you. I'd be happy to pick up flowers or something & take to her.. If you ever feel she needs a littel extra hug from you...
I think alot of people feel weird commenting. I know I did when I was visiting blogs and didn't have on of my own. Now I yap on everyone's blog. Thanks for visiting...I love finding new places to stop in...and following people home is the best way to find new blogs. I gotta get a site meter...I only have a counter and it doesn't give any detail info.
Linda, I often check a couple of times a day to see if blogs have been updated, so some of those may be me!!!! But not 73 LOL!!! I often read quickly and then come back to comment when I have more time, I check out all of my blog friends blogs first thing in the morning at work, but if I comment on all of them I would not start work until lunchtime, so I always try to get back and comment, but sometimes it takes a few hours.
I have lots of lurkers too...and sometimes I am one...LOL. If I am using Hubby's computer and too lazy to sign in then I just "surf".....I know...my bad.
I am a newcomer, not sure how I found your site??? I too wonder who all those mystery people are that visit but do not leave a comment. I will admit that I often will read but I do not always comment. I am not way up there on daily visits. Just stopping by to say "HI"
I think that I figured it out once and it's usually about 10% of visitors that comment. I don't really mind though, because I know that I'm not always able to leave a comment on everyone's blog.
But wouldn't it be wonderful to spend hours just leaving comments, because we bloggers all love our comments!
Linda, You've hit a nerve!! Wow, we do all think alike lol. Kathi ps you got a bonus comment from me.
I just put the site meter to see if I had alot of lurkers. My parents are lurkers, so it is also fun to see when they are checking it,since I can see my home town names on my list. I also swear I might have to stop commenting on people that have the security codes on their blogs. It takes up so much of my time and I normally get it wrong the first try since the run all those letters together.
Oh and like another person said, I too hardly ever look at it. I put it on a few weeks ago and have only looked at it about three times.
Being fairly new to blogging, I had no idea that you could even have a site meter! I think it might freak me out a little to see many visitors but few comments. I mostly picture my friends and family reading my blog, but I guess I could be wrong!
I know what you mean. Same thing happens to me, but I am still surprised anyone even FOUND my blog. Of course, I have my regulars I visit, too. I have kept my blogroll rather small and a couple of those on it have never commented, or even visited, mine, but I am okay with that - I truly enjoy reading their posts and they are very popular.
Good morning Linda :)
Oh the evil sitemeter!! LOL Actually I use statcounter, but I guess it works the same way. About 20% of my viewers comment I think, but I'm bad at math LOL Sometimes I lurk, but for the most part I leave a comment. If someone leaves a comment on my blog I reciprocate. You have the same name as a couple other gals, so you may have commented and I didn't know it was you. I figured it out because you have a lower case "L".
Anyway, I'm glad I figured it out ;)
rue
Yeah, I quit using a site meter because it freaked me out too, then I went private so I could blog more freely about work, etc.
