I don't eat enough to keep a bird alive yet I keep tipping the scale. A few pounds here, a few pounds there, enough already!
It's time to pull out the big guns...

Ok, now that I've got my exercise plan intact, anyone know of a good remedy for those darn hot flashes that seem to have taken over my life now too!?!

Hormones.
I put them off for a long time - until it got unbearable and stayed that way for 7 months. In 7 months I never once got more than 2 hours of consecutive sleep. It was having an effect on every aspect of my life. I finally gave in and went on low dose hormones. I still have some yucky symptoms, but the hot flashes stopped. I started sleeping 5 hours - then - finally - 8. I felt like a new woman and being able to get some rest helped me feel able to deal with the other symptoms I was dealing with.
The weight? Yeah, I got nothin'...
What a drag it is getting old...
I tried HPT, and didn't like it. Now ofcourse I never liked BC pills either, something about me and artificial hormones, not good. I might look into the bioidenticals, but I'm skeptical......I know I know, so for now I just live with the flashes.
Like Tammy, I have no advise on the weight........I have issues.........ugh.
Keep us posted about this shred thing!
Hi Linda,
Welcome to my WORLD!!! I have tried an over the counter pill for Hot Flashes/Night sweats and it helped. I'll email you the name.
I eat like a 40 lb Robin...so I know why I'm gaining!!! I just hungry...
Warmly...
Deb :)
Hi Linda,
My doctor warned me to lose weight before menopause but did I listen? Nope! Now it takes me weeks to lose a single pound. UGH! I don't know of any remedies for hot flashes except maybe a loving husband to fan you with a magazine! A paper plate works well too :)Seriously though, I have heard some good things about the over the counter remedies. I wish you luck and hope they end soon. Hugs, Loretta
Fortunately I never had what I would call a full blown hot flash. I would feel flushed from time to time, but I never had night sweats. I guess I'm lucky. I took hormones for a couple of years, then the negative report came out, and my doctor took me off them. I got by okay. Mood swings from time to time, but nothing serious.
Hi Linda,
Thanks for "putting it out there!". My stuff comes and goes, I don't know why. I don't want to turn to HRT unless I really have to. Hot flashes are the hardest but I try to focus on something else when they start and soon it is over. I also try to get somewhere cool.
I have been playing the yoyo game with my weight for 12 years. The only thing for me that works is low carbs, small portions and exercize (not a lot, I am pretty lazy that way LOL!).
Let me know how that workout video is. I never heard of it!
xoxo

Hot Flashes.....Yuck! All I can say is they get better....but it takes time. Read about foods, yadda, yadda, yadda, lol. I'll bet that tape is a killer.. My story sounds like KBeau's, guess we are kinda lucky not to have the full blown ones.
Yeah, I know getting old is a bitch but the alternative is worse. Keeping the weight off is very hard...I hate to deprive myself. The hot flashes are a pain but the night sweats were even more bothersome to me. I still get flashes from time to time but fortunaely the night sweats have ceased. Sorry I have no advice but know you have lots of company.
How's Jake doing?
Jillian will whip you into shape! (I love her Shred workouts but they are tough!) I haven't even hit menopause yet, and the weight gain has started. There was a time when I never had to worry about what I ate. Oh, those were the days!
Hi Linda,
I had really bad night sweats and heavy bleeding till I was told by my doctor to give up gluten (flour, rye, barley) I can't eat oats either.
It took about 3 months to see a difference but WOW! I feel like a teenager again... NO nightsweats, light periods, I'm not anemic anymore and I have energy and don't feel like I need naps anymore either.
I think what it comes down to is finding what works best for you! I've found after MANY years of trial and error what works for me. BUT have also learned I will never be able to have gluten again.
Best to you!
Robin~♥
Agreed!
I love my windows here-no screens so I periodically just flip open the window and stick my head outside to cool off. It works for me : )
The hot flashes were bad for the first few months but have settled down now for me so hang in there. The weight is another story though...I feel like my metabolism has come to a screeching halt. I just got the shred vid too and will give it a try.
The shocking part of this for me is how it all seemed to come on overnite...no symptoms one day and then suddenly every symptom in the book!
Oh, and have some chocolate because that definitely helps...not with the weight thing obviously but it does help with the mood thing : )
I can relate to the added pounds, but I don't eat like a bird. :( I really am trying to watch it. I've started cutting down my portions & am determined to get on that treadmill!
I had a hysterectomy about 10 years ago when I was only 39 and my dr. put me on hormones. I've never had a hot flash and don't have any problems sleeping etc.
I know there are pros and cons to hormone replacement, but it's worked for me.
Maybe there's something at the health food store??
I agree with Tammy.....what a drag....getting old.
Thanks again for the sweet Mother's Day card Linda.
You are SO thoughtful.
Love,
Valerie
Linda- You scare me for what is yet to come---and very soon I can tell. I haven't been through this yet but I do have a friend that told me that bioidenticals are the absolute BEST thing to do. She said it has made a huge difference in everything- hair, mood, weight, even hot flashes. Wish I had more info for you but something to maybe look in to. Hang in there! I've been having the night sweats so I know the rest is just around the corner!
don't even go there! i'm so scared of the big M. I can feel it's lurking eyes looking my way. ew.
you poor thing.
I use natural progesterone cream. Takes a few weeks to feel the changes but makes a huge difference.
Keeps the hot flashes at bay.
A book that may help: What your doctor may not tell you about menopause by Dr. John R. Lee. You can find it on Amazon. The weight....well, still working on that!
Minimal HRT (a patch) helped me with the hot flashes. As for the weight. Grrrrrr! It's not that I've actually gained so much weight-- only about 5 pounds, it's that the weight is in different places and much, much bigger than it ever was before. Like the spare tire around my lower waist that was NEVER there before! And my gigantic butt- Oy.
