What The Heck Is It?

Wednesday I showed you a picture I recently took of my lemon tree. It is overflowing with lemons right now. In fact, it's overflowing with other fruit too! Get a load of this...

I kid you not...

We grow em' big here in California don't we!?!

To the right and down a bit from our lemon tree, we have a grapefruit tree. Now be it from the wind, bees, or whatever the case, but I'm guessing these trees have cross pollinated. We've had these humongous lemon/grapefruit things grow on our lemon tree for about 3 years now.

A few weeks ago my sister stopped by and while she was here she picked some lemons to take home with her. Out of curosity, she also picked one of the "plump" ones. This is her report: Although they're not as sour as a normal lemon, they taste lemony, not grapefruity!

Love the lemon tree, and the other plump fruit too, how interesting, you're growing hybrids!!!

The lemons on the coast of Italy look like that. And they don't taste nearly as sour as a normal lemon. When I first saw them I was sure they must be some sort of hybrid but they were just gigantic lemons.

Oh and I'm totally jealous you have a lemon tree. : )

Have a nice weekend!

Hi Linda,
They look like mini pumpkins only more yellow! They actually sound tasty. It's so ucky here in Southern Illinois right now that I can't even imagine something growing!
You asked how I found your blog. I was feeling really sick last night and was just clicking on the "next blog" at the top of mine. It goes through blogs one by one.And there you were! There are some strange blogs out there, not yours, yours was good! Love Di

That is "very interesting"...you sure could make a lot of lemonade of of just one of those cuties. I am also jealous, we love lemons in our tea, but boy are they expensive to buy .
I didn't know lemon trees had thorns, that is little thorns it's it?

A lemon tree..........ahhhh, the smell. MMMMMM, it would always smell like I had just dusted in my house.
Lemony huh? Funny.

I have never seen anything like those. My Dad keeps telling me to plant a "fruit salad" tree. It's a citrus tree with 3 different types of Citrus fruit growing on it.

OMG! My Meyer Lemon Tree has the SAME THING on it!!! It's so weird!!! I haven't had the nerve to pick one and cut it open. Maybe I should do that . . .
Really looking forward to getting this rain we so desperately need! I love the rain! And we need snow too! But I feel bad for the people in the burn areas . . . but what can we do. It's all in God's hands anyway.
Thanks for visiting!
Have a great weekend! Karen

You're fortunate to have so many lemons...they cost a fortune at the store! My brother had a lemon tree and was always giving them away. Enjoy your normal and your grapefruit wanna be lemons!

I THINK this is the first time I "lurked" so am officially de-lurking! It would be wonderful to have a backyard lemon tree! I never seem to have one on hand when I need one. I've reluctantly settled for having a jar of reconstituted lemon juice in my frig, I confess.

They are funny!
Thank your sister for reporting back and letting us know just how they tasted.
I don't think I'd try one.

I was thinking it was just a middle aged lemon with lots of cellulite.

I want one! I've only had a fresh-from-the-tree lemon ONCE in my life (well, at one time in my life, I ate as many as I could stand). I was only 20 but I've never forgotten how different AND wonderful they taste straight from the tree.

You might want to consider calling your county extension office or local agricultural university- they might be REALLY interested in your lemon-grapefruit cross. Sometimes things like this are worth MONEY too. Maybe not in this case but it would be interesting to find out if this is a common/uncommon thing.

Absolutely facinating! You may have discovered something quite unique. I agree with Cynthia, you may want to call your local agriculture organization. You may be written up in some famous journal. Go for it!

That is so cool! How come you haven't tried one? Troys boss gave us a whole box of lemons & I have made so much lemonade... I won't touch the stuff but my family loves it. But I have to tell you I am sick of a sticky floor, they always spill or turn their cup upside down & say "Mom we're done can we have more!" As little drips go on my floor...
