When we got home Friday from our walk, I decided to start cleaning out the filing cabinet in the garage. When Howard retired a few years ago, he brought home a 4-drawer filing cabinet that we put in the office closet. Not needing 2 filing cabinets, I've been wanting to consolidate everything into the large one in the closet. Friday was the day!
Besides tax info and papers that we need to keep, I had tons of old letters and cards in the filing cabinet, as well as piles and piles of old college papers and notes. I debated on keeping them, but in the end, I ripped them all up and threw them away. I filled the entire trash can! Throwing all of my college stuff away really tugged at my heart but I knew there was no logical reason to hang onto it. It was a weird feeling tossing it all away though. It made me sad and I felt that now that part of my life is gone forever. Now I have no record of that time in my life ever happening, other than report cards. As a student I kept great notes and took such pride in my education so I hated to see all of it go in the trash, but on the other hand, what was I saving it for? Saving it so that my kids could just throw it away when I'm gone? I actually saved them ALOT of work!
While I was at it, I cleaned out a dresser and other areas of the garage, making piles to be donated. I put Jake in a big comfy chair so that he could be outside with me the whole time. He loved it and was as content as can be. I hate to keep him couped up in the house all the time and as long as he can be with momma, he's a happy boy!
We had lunch with some friends today who invited themselves to our house for dinner Monday night. Yes, they invited themselves, but it's ok! One of the couples owns a restaurant and they are always so generous with us. Believe me, it's our turn!
I guess I should now get busy cleaning the inside of the house!

Good for you! It's hard for me to throw those kinds of things away too, but I always remind myself that I haven't looked at it in years!
My husband has a hard time throwing things out and is still hanging on to his college papers...and some of his college books!! your Jake is like my Chrissy...she just wants to be with me and then she's fine
I felt the same way about my school papers when we moved to AZ. And I'd saved some files from 33 years of teaching, but I realized it was silly to drag them 800 miles to just sit in the garage for 30 more years. It's refreshing! I'm glad Jake got to help. Lola loves to help too. Yes, walking is more enjoyable with buddies.
Jake is just adorable! It's always hard to know what to keep when organizing. Sounds like you had a very productive day with some good supervision by Jake!!!
I think it's great that you finally let go of the papers. I had the same experience a couple of years ago- threw out all my old drawings and landscape plans from college. They're so far out of date I couldn't use them for a portfolio now if I wanted to anyway!
No matter what time you choose to do it, I'm glad you've started walking!
Can I come too? I will help clean! We go through our filing cabinet every other year. I still have all of my daughters collage "Stuff" in bins in my basement. Wish I could get them out! Unfortunately she lives about 800 miles away and there's too much to ship! Love Di ♥
I need some serious help in getting the clutter out of my life. Glad you got so much done.
Hi Linda...I so understand your hesitation in throwing out your college notes. I felt the same way...so much work!...but in the end did what you did! Why keep them? However, when I retired from teaching, I didn't hesitate to throw away everything...and it was sooo liberating! lol Happy week!...Debbie
It always feels good to be able to clean out...now do you want to come to my house? Sure could use your help as I have been dragging my heels for no apparent reason and we need to have a garage sale.
Doesn't it feel good to have it done though??????
I love those kinds of days where you get so much accomplished!
