I was really surprised by this too. Makes you wonder how long things weren't great between them.

I was surprised as well. It makes me sad to see marriages that have been together that long, break up.So sad what is happening in the world these days.

I know!! After 40 years why not just stick it out and each live in one of their 400 houses and just endure!! Somebody has a girlfriend or boyfriend that they want to go further in a relationship with.
It surprised me, as well. I can't imagine throwing in the towel after 40 years of togetherness.

I agree with Diane, I wasn't surprised at all. They were having problems even during the 2000 campaign, because of her drinking problem, of course if I was married to him, I'd have a drinking problem too..
What surprised me was when their friend tried to explain to a reporter how it was really all George Bush's fault that they are separated. Seems they never recovered from the election being "stolen" from them. lol..wonder what else they are going to blame him for?
I guess if you are miserable it's better to separate after 40 yrs than to live in misery and a lie forever.
I have a friend who divorced her husband of 54 yrs. 2 yrs ago and she said the last 2 years are the happiest she's known since she was 18.

Oh there is a couple in my ward that are getting a divorce. They have been married for over 40 years!!!! So sad.
Even after a couple of days of this news, it still surprises me a bit. Making it forty years is a long term investment. But, then again, after reading Molly's comment, if they can have a few happy years? Whose to say?
I think the Clintons are too politically married to ever part ways. Even though, in my opinion, they are likely emotional divorced and have been for some time, they stay together for the politics
What is it saying to those who are just getting married?
"Hey, if we don't like it, even after 40 years, it's OK. Look at the Gore's".
