And I'm nosy...
So here's the question: Have you ever been in business for yourself? We're only in the very very beginning talking stages but my son and I are discussing a joint venture of some type.
Truth be told, we have a son who is lost in finding a "career" and needs a little direction. He's worked in the restaurant business for the last 5 years but knows it's not something he wants to do the rest of his life. He's tried college a few times and it's just not his thing, for now anyways. Mom and Dad(us) really don't need to add anything to our lives but realize he needs the direction. A small family business may just be the thing.
Are we crazy? Should we just let him find his own way in life? Would you consider doing the same thing for your children? Maybe you already have!
I've been doing alot of research and it takes next to nothing to open up a thrift store so this is something we are seriously considering. A small mom and pop type place where you could name your own hours and be your own boss. Luckily we've got alot of good business minds in the family so we'll see what transpires!
Do you know anyone who owns a thrift or consignment store?

If you have a good business mind and background, I think you would do well opening something small. Only you can answer the question "should you do it for your son".
I worked independently as a paralegal, going to court for lawyers to set dates for trials with the judge. I liked doing it but then baby #4 came along. Whatever your son chooses to do, I wish him the best of luck!

Hi Linda....what a good question..I'll be interested in seeing what everyone thinks...I have a daughter who after 15years or so still blames us for "making" her go to law school...she wanted to go to L.A. and go into the film business....I don't think she will ever stop reminding us that we took her dream away from her...But atleast she has a profession that can never be taken away from her and in this economy she makes alot of money...I don't know how old your son is but I always think no matter how old your kids are parents should point them in the right direction to become successful in life....Is there anything he is truly interested in that might turn into a lucrative career?.....These kids need to have a way to make a good income for the future....All my best to you as parents and to your son....
Hi Linda,
We do have a family business but encouraged Michael to go to college anyway. He can always fall back on the family business if he should decide being a PTA is not for him. Since our family business is home construction we have also encouraged him to get his realtors license, take a civil service test, and continue his education after he graduates. These days it may take knowing how to do more than one think to keep afloat.
Wishing your son the best in whatever path he chooses!Hugs
Hi Linda,
Life has many decisions! My son, 31 years old, has his own little construction company and boy does he struggle...he also works on "friend's" cars for "extra" cash! He wants to be his own boss! Just supporting their decisions is awesome!
Happy weekend!
having a thrift store would be FUN and LOTS OF WORK!! What isn't work?!
We financed Josh opening his Tea-Kwon-Do Studio. Which he loves. He opened it about the time that the economy took it's BIG hit, it makes enough for him to make the loan payment and pay the studio bills...but that is all...no extra... He and Ali have full time jobs that cover the "living" exspenses.
He is happy and loves teaching his students...so to me it is worth it.
He and Ali are talking about refinacing the loan so it is in their names and not mine and Kirk's.
So...yea no regrets.
Best of Luck
I was in business with my son for a short while and I worked my butt off. First I helped him financially, but realizing that he couldn't afford any employees, I offered to help out in the store. The business did VERY OK, but we weren't rolling in the dough. We made enough to where I was paid back my investment and then was paid a very small amount for the hours I worked. It was exhausting, and hope to NEVER do it again. Having said that...if my child needed help and was committed 100%, yes, I would do it again (sigh).
HI!!!
I say GO for it and Give it a try, make him do his fair share and he will succeed.
Yes, we owned a SNAP ON TOOLS business when we were first married, It did very well, but we were young and inmature, my hubby worked hard at it, but did not like the Bill collecting part of it, auto mechanics change jobs alot, so they would take the tools and we might not see them again, so after 2 short years we sold it.
Lots of work, yet great owning your own business\
Go for it!!!
hugs,
jamie
I didn't even know what a consignment store was until I watched an episode of Hoarders last night.
I've never been in business for myself, but I watched my brother and his wife lose everything. Literally everything - so I am naturally afraid. I admire anyone who dares and is successful!
That sounds a little scary!
I would be afraid it would take up my free time.
It could be so fun though.
Depends on your niche.
Good luck and keep us updated.
I don't know much about owning or running a consignment shop but I occasionally shop at a couple. The ones that I "think" are doing well seem very particular about what they take in order to move merchandise, keep customers coming back in (because they know there will be quality), and keep good consigners. Good Luck!
