We had never really been a pet family per se, but knowing that my daughter was heading off to college, having a son who was living in Hawaii, and then having a husband who worked out of town, I knew I'd be one lonely lady in the months to come and was convinced that a cute little lap dog was just what I needed, and boy oh boy was I right!
After weeks and weeks of visiting the pound, my daughter spotted Jake in a cage with about 3 other dogs and we knew in an instant that he was the one we wanted. Now our pound has a "drawing" when you want a particular dog so you have to come back on another day and they draw names out of a hat to see who gets that animal. Luckily, on that fateful day, I was the only one who showed up wanting Jake. The other people on the list never showed up!
After owning Jake for a few years, we went to visit our daughter at Arizona State for Parent's Weekend and when we landed at the Burbank Airport to come home, my husband had a missed call from the vet's office where Jake was being boarded. We immediately called them back and they said Jake was having some issues and we needed to get there immediately. By the time we made the 2 hour drive home, Jake was already paralyzed in his back legs.
Long story short, we'll never know exactly what happened (if someone possibly stepped on him or if he did indeed rupture a disc), but our little Jakester has been paralyzed for over 2 years now. He had the costly spinal cord surgery but it didn't help at all, which was no surprise. We were told that there was only a 25% chance that he would walk again but we wanted to give him that chance, even if the odds were low. They're suggestion to us was to put him to sleep. To us, that option was out of the question and we've never looked back!
It seems like forever ago that Jake was able to get around but truthfully I hardly remember those days. We've now had him as a paralyzed dog longer than a healthy, walking dog, and you know what, we couldn't love him anymore than we do. He is unable to go potty on his own so we have to "express" his bladder throughout the day and it's like we have a newborn instead of a dog, but he's our Jake, our little Jakie, the Jakester, a big time Mommy's boy, and the owner of my heart! Who wouldn't love this sweet face...
By the way, we special ordered Jake some "wheels" and from day one he's never liked them. His whole personality changes when he's in his wheels, he acts depressed. Needless to say, he gets carried around all day, and couldn't be happier!

I know what a big part of your life Jake is, and it was nice to read the story of how he came to be with you.
What a sweet dog!! You are both so fortunate to have each other to love!!
Jake is just adorable! He is so lucky to have you for his parents. It was meant to be. I'm sure being in your arms all day is right where he wants to be!Hugs
Oh my, this makes me sad and happy all at the same time! I can't imagine how much you love this little guy - with a face like that...how could you not!! I know he has found the perfect spot in your arms and heart.
I know how much you LOVE Jake, he is adorable. We are just as mushy when it comes to our two pups, they just steal your heart. Jake was so lucky to get you guys as parents, not many would be so loving to a dog with issues, but you love him in spite of it which says tons about the person you are. It is such a blessing that Jake has such a good and loving home. He is a keeper.
What a story about your sweet young Man. He is so cute. I bet he loves the cuddles and carries all day long...he is very blessed to be in a loving family. Thank you for sharing a piece of your heart with us.
Wow, what a story. I'm so thankful Jake has such a loving home. You are such wonderful doggy parents!! And Jake is just about the cutest thing ever. :)

It sounds like you rescued Jake and he has been your pal ever since :) He sure does look content and lucky that he has a home like yours. Thanks for sharing your story and Jake with us.
I think that is a wonderful story!
I didn't know he was handicapable! His face is truly cute and I can see how he would totally steal your heart.
I can see that you've both been a blessing to each other.
It's amazing that he doesn't like the wheels. But then, dogs really know there stuff. Mostly they know that we are wrapped around their little paws.
Cute!
You are awesome.
Love you and Jake's story and now I think I have to go over and check out what else is going on at the Pet Party.
It's a great, yet sad story. He's such a cute dog. I'm sure he's well loved and loves you guys too!
There's something about a pet that just tugs at our heart strings. We don't know what we'd do without them!
Linda, this has to be the most touching and loving pet post I have seen thus far. Jake is so blessed to have you and your husband in his adorable little life. Thanks so much for sharing such a beautiful part of your family with all of us. I've enjoyed my visit and am now one of your newest followers.
Have a wonderful evening,
Gail
Awwww, Jake is adorable and it sounds like he landed with the family he was meant to be with:) I'm sure he's thrilled being carried around! He's very cute!
Jake has THE sweetest face...I absolutely know why you do so much for him...we are facing the same thing with little Scoob. When my mother died, someone brought flowers to the house and opened the door. Scoobie barked scaring them and they stepped onhim and broke all the bones in his feet. Now he has a disc or some neurological thing, has seizures and falls all the time. we carry him about most of the time too. Sweet things have our heart, huh?
Oh my, Jake has quite a story, and it certainly looks like he went to the right family!!!!
He is adorable and I can tell how much you love that little critter.
We have only had our dog, Lucy, for 6 months now, and love her to death too. Can't imagine not having her around.
kisses to Jake --the Jakester

Oh Linda, that is the sweetest story. Of course, I am crying. Jake is such a cutie....xoxo You both are blessed to have found one another!
I saw that link up and wanted to do it but didn't have time that time. I wanted to get some old pictures of Tucker, scan them and I just didn't have time. I hope people don't get tired of me talking about Tucker on my blog all the time. He is my boy and I love him to death. Husband travels alot/kids have their friends. 90% of the time its just me and him.
As cute as he is in pictures, they really don't do justice to how sweet his little face is.
awwwww...sweet jake!
Somethings are just ment to be. You are very special parents!
