My Kitchen Shelf Metamorphosis

Around this time every year I get motivated to do little projects around the house. I'll get alot done from now until early summer. After that, it's just to darn hot so not much gets accomplished. Then it's the holidays and before you know it, the cycle begins again.

For the first time since November, I went thrifting Tuesday afternoon. I've learned it's either feast or famine when thrifting but Tuesday I was finding things at every turn. More often than not, I go home empty handed but Tuesday was my lucky day!

About 5 months ago I bought this tiered shelf for my kitchen. I had been looking for a few years but could never find exactly what I wanted. I ended up buying this beauty from a man back East who makes them and sells them on Ebay.

I had envisioned big plans for these shelves but truthfully they've pretty much been empty the whole time. I had 5 beautiful green plates displayed on the second shelf but that was about it. It just never seemed to come together, until Tuesday night!

While thrifting I found 3 white plates, a small white creamer, a white medium sized pitcher, and greenery in a planter that perfectly matched the plates I had on the shelf. It was all starting to come together in my mind so as soon as I got home, I got busy accessorizing and pulling out things I already had such as silver and blue and white items. It looked awesome! The shelves looked so beautiful that my husband commented on it first thing yesterday morning, something that he doesn't do very often.

I also bought a new lampshade for the living room. Have you noticed that round lampshades are all the rage right now. Just something as simple as changing a lampshade can make a big difference and freshen up the decor. Although I am sold on the round lampshade idea, I'm not sure if I'm sold on the particular one that I bought. I bought it at Tuesday Morning and it was the only one they had. I think it's just a little to white for me. Most of my lampshades are more of an off white or creamier color. Here is the lamp with it's original shade and then with the new round lampshade, still in it's clear plastic covering. I haven't taken it off yet because I'm not sure it's staying. So tell me, which one of the lampshades do you prefer?

While I was busy in the living room yesterday afternoon mulling over lampshades, I heard the biggest, loudest noise of all time. I ran into the kitchen knowing full well what had just happened. Yes, my beautifully decorated shelf, with all of it's new accessories, had come crashing down off the wall. All of my perfectly placed treasures were in a million pieces, scattered everywhere. After already picking up alot of the mess, I saw my camera on the table and took a picture of the aftermath. I had my camera close by because I had wanted to show you the metamorphosis that had taken place. Unfortunately, I was just a little too late!

I still can't believe what happened. My husband and I are extremely careful when hanging things and we checked and double checked to make certain it was sturdy on the wall. Turns out the hooks that were sent with the shelf weren't strong enough and they bent with the weight, allowing the whole shelf to come crashing down.

The disaster has been cleaned up but guaranteed, we'll be picking up pieces of glass for weeks to come! I immediately brought out the touch-up paint for the wall and chair rail and we'll be hanging the shelf again soon, but with much heavier, stronger hooks, thanks to a trip to Lowe's. I'll be starting my shelf metamorphosis all over again, but at least I now have a vision of what I'm looking for. And truthfully, I'm thankful. Other than broken plates and such, not much was damaged on the walls, chair rail, floor, or shelf. It could have been much worse!

(Although I don't have any pictures of my thrifty finds this week (since they're in the trash can, boo hoo!), I decided to go ahead and link up with Leigh today for Thrifty Thursday. Thank you Leigh for hosting Thrifty Thursday each week. Hopefully next time I join in, I'll have pictures! To join in the fun or to visit other Thrifty Thursday participants, click here.)

Aaaaghhh! I was hoping to find a picture of that shelf all decorated. I can't imagine how sick you must have felt.
I really like the shelf though and can't wait to see it filled up!
I like the new lamp shade. It's sometimes hard to really see the true color of things in pictures, but it looks like if the shade was more creamy, it wouldn't match the white in the base.

Linda, first let me say I agree with Mari on the shade, I like the look and the color seems to be perfect for the base.
Secondly, how heart breaking this is, I would be sick for awhile, thank goodness there were no heirlooms on it. I know you will find more treasures to add to it, and look forward to pictures of the finished shelf.

Oh Linda,
What a shame. Such beautiful pieces all broken to bits. I'm glad the shelf wasn't damaged too. Well now you have an excuse to go shopping again. I hope you can find just the right pieces to relace the ones you lost. Hugs, Loretta

Oh, I feel so bad, Linda! My heart would have been broken but you seemed to have rolled with it. I wish you loads of luck in finding new dishes that you like. Plan B.

Oh Linda, how awful that you lost all your new finds and I was looking for the picture with all of them displayed. I wonder how many other people have bought this shelf from this person and had the same thing happen??? LOVE the new shade. If the lamp is white in with the blue then you should keep the white shade, cream color would not go. Just my opinion.

I like the new shade...I kept scrolling back and forth because I love the shape of the 1st one, but I think the 2nd looks better with that base.

Sorry about your disaster....could have been worse, I suppose...

Thanks for sharing

I did the same thing as Patti -- I kept scrolling back and forth. I think your new shade is a keeper.

I am so sorry that your finds came crashing down. I was really looking forward to seeing what you had put together. However, I was also thinking that since you are getting ready to retire in the near future, you need to be mindful of collecting those little treasures. Just reminding you of your goals, friend.

I feel for you and your hearing that crash in the other room. I am so sorry!

I honestly can't decide on the lampshade, I like them both! The first option keeps the lamp petite looking, which is nice and delicate. The second gives the lamp a larger presence, which is nice too. Yeah, this is why I never can make a decision.

Good for you to grab your camera!
I don't think I would of had the presence to even think of taking a picture.
You have such a good attitude about the whole crash.

I'm voting for the round lamp shade.

Oh No....I hate picking up broken glass....especially that much...that is just awful!
Call me different (many do) I like your original shade.
Girl you don't need a tutor for shutterfly books,,,really I promise! Just upload some pictures, click on book and play around...it is very simple. You can rearrange, add, delete, all sorts of stuff.

Oh no!! I'm so sorry that happened. Your beautiful display, I was already imagining it in my mind and scrolling down to see it. :-(

I'm sure you'll outdo yourself again! Thanks for your kind comments today over at my blog... :-)

Hi sweet friend! I've been so busy lately (and out of town too) so I've been a bad blog friend. Sorry. I've had a good time tonight catching up with you. But...gosh...I didn't know you broke your ankle! (hanging my head in shame!). I feel your pain girlfriend. I broke both bones in my right leg right above the ankle in 2006. Major surgery, physical therapy, etc. Not fun. But, hey, I'm back playing tennis. Hang in there. You'll be back to your old self soon.

Thanks for your visit tonight.

Hugs from the beach!

I have missed you sweet friend. I am so happy to have you join in. These thrifty findsa re just perfect. I am sick about your shelf. Sick!
Sorry I am so late. As it ended up, we did have a (6 hour) 2AM-8Am stint in the ER with my son. Praise God, all is ok. But,it's taken me some time to recover from being up all night. Alas, I am late in getting around to everyone this week. My apologies.
Sincere thanks for linking up to Tales from Bloggeritville Thrifty Thursday!

HUGS,

That's awful, Linda. I'm sorry that happened. I would've sat down and just cried.
I guess on the brighter side, you could start doing mosaic? Ok, not funny.
Have a great week.
