So here's the question: Do you read the obituaries?
I read the obituaries daily, mainly for two reasons...
1) I live in a fairly large city, but it has a small town feel. After living here for 20+ years, I've come to know alot of people. I read the obituary yesterday of a man that I went to church with years ago. He was only 54 years old, much to young to be leaving his wife and children.
2) Being a nurse, it's just something we nurses do.

I've been looking at the obituaries since I became a nurse. Like you said - I think all nurses do that.
I used to when I was a receptionist at a funeral home in Chicago. It is how I knew if we were going to be busy that night! Love Di ♥
nah...maybe if I had lived in this town longer I might?
Have a nice weekend!
I read the obits online for my "hometown" in ID that we moved from 8 months ago. It's where I know people, so I read those daily.
But I do read the obituaries occasionally in AZ though I know NO ONE. I just like to snoop and find out about a person if their face, name, or age catches my eye. I hate to see little ones or young teens there. Life is so short.
Some people have strange obituaries too. You wonder what kind of mindset they had in life to have that kind of farewell message.
I read them because I have lived in this "area" for so long that I know so many people whom I have lost contact with. I do see people in there that I know and even some of my childrens friends...it's sad, but that way we can send our condolences or even attend the funeral and pay our respects.
When I worked for a bank I read them daily. We had many elderly account holders and I wanted to be aware. Sadly I saw many names I recognized.
Now we don't get a daily paper and I really don't look at the obits.
Oh Linda, I read them faithfully, everyday....bad thing is, I usually know everyone I read about (small town)
Our paper lists the website of the funeral home that you can actually write condolences to the family and I sometimes read that site and see ones that weren't in the paper. I have a friend, and her grandmother use to have the phonebook beside her when she read the obituaries and crossed the names from the phone book!!! Whether she knew them or not! Too funny! I really don't like reading about people my age!! Slowdown Time!
I did when we got the paper. Not at all now.
Hi Linda,
Your pool redo is looking awesome! Are you going to invite us all over for a pool party?!
I sometimes read the obits...you never know who may have passed away that you haven't kept in contact with.
Have a Great weekend!
Warmly,
Deb :)
I don't have a chance to read the paper everyday but when I do...the obits are the first thing I turn to. Habit, I guess...
I only get the paper on Sundays and Thursdays (yeah, kind of weird days) but I do read the obits.
I don't get the paper anymore so no I do not.
My mom does though, religiously and sometimes she'll call me. It's kind of funny and kinda creepy.
It's funny, since I have retired from nursing, no. You may have a point there about it being something nurses just do. Hmmm. Have a good weekend!
Now don't laugh...yes, we read the NJ obituaries because we have a 89 year old FIL who constantly leaves his phone off the hook...for days and days and days and he gets furious if we call the police department after like ten days to go over and check on him...he's been known to throw the cops out...so we stopped doing that and now when we can't reach him for weeks on end we just check the Rahway obits online....it saves alot of headaches....I know that's awful....but we got tired of getting yelled and cursed at...
He's not the kindest senior citizen...
Ya, I read them.
I'm a nurse so natch I wanna see if I did things right in the ER.
AND
I wanna make sure I'm not in there.
I don't read them daily but I probably should. I've missed a few for people that I knew. When I read the paper online I usually look at the obits first. My mom reads them faithfully everyday and will call me if there is someone she knows or someone she thinks we know.
Hi Linda,
I love your questions! Yes, I do read the obituaries, even though I may not know many of the people, but just out of curiosity and sometimes they're interesting.
yes...I read them. Is that creepy...some of them are interesting and some are very creative. Plus at my age I'm now seeing obits for friends parents...
I used to from time to time when I lived in Utah.....now that I have moved here I DON'T KNOW A SOUL. so NO I don't read them now.
But an interesting thing about this place, is when people die, they have their funeral announcements at all the stores for people to see---at the check out stands.
kinda weird
I guess they--------ah, checked out.
We didn't get the paper when we were in Flagstaff, and I probably wouldn't know anyone there anyway, but back home when we'd visit I would read them to see if there was anyone I knew.
Occasionally there would be someone and it would make me sad, or flood me with memories of that person.
not me....but i dont get/read the paper either@
I think all nurses do that.

So funny, I have read the obituaries since I was a little girl. They always seem to fascinate me.
